How to Get AI Answers Quoted From Your Own Sources Instead of Made-Up Ones

To get AI answers quoted from your own sources, the assistant has to search and read your saved material before it answers, quote the exact words it relied on, have those quotations checked against what it actually read, and say plainly when nothing you saved bears on the question. That is how the Thought partner in Noeis is built: it searches your library, reads sources in full when it needs to, and any quotation it cannot find in a source it was shown is sent back for repair or replaced with your own passages.

The result is less fluent than a general chatbot and much easier to trust. When it says a source said something, you can check the words.

How this guide was produced

Written by Athan Tsokolas, Founder, Noeis.

This guide describes how the Noeis Thought partner answers questions today: the tools it uses to search and read, the rules it is given, the quotation check that runs before you see an answer, and what it does when your library is silent.

It does not claim the check catches every error. It checks quotations and citations, which are the parts of an answer you can verify.

Direct answer

Trustworthy answers about your reading come from searching first, quoting exactly, and admitting silence.

The Thought partner searches your library before it answers, quotes the words it relied on, has every long quotation checked against the sources it read, and tells you in one sentence when your library does not cover the question.

  • Quotations of five or more words must appear in a source the agent was shown.
  • A cited source is one whose own words appear in the answer.
  • No match in your library means the answer says so instead of guessing.

Why AI answers about your reading drift

Ask a general chatbot what an article said and it will often give you a confident answer built from its training data, an earlier summary, or a plausible guess. It may even put that guess in quotation marks. The answer reads well, and you have no fast way to tell which parts came from the source.

Claim

An answer about your reading is only useful if you can check it against the reading.

Evidence

  • Paraphrase cannot be verified without rereading the whole source.
  • Invented quotations look exactly like real ones.
  • A model that always answers will answer even when you never saved anything on the question.

Why this matters

Once one fabricated quote slips into a memo or a draft, every other answer from the same tool becomes suspect.

The Thought partner searches and reads before it answers

When a model is available, the Thought partner answers with two tools. One searches your library: saved sources, highlights with their margin notes, notebook pages, concepts, and the views you hold. The other reads one source in full by the id a search returned. It can search and read over a few rounds before it writes the answer.

Its instructions are short and specific. When it relies on a source, it quotes the exact words in double quotes and names the source, and it may quote only words from a passage it was shown or read. When something you found supports or cuts against a view you hold, it says which and quotes the view.

Example: connecting two saved pieces

Say you ask how margin of safety relates to a piece on checklists you saved. If both are in your library, the partner can search for them, read the relevant passages, and answer with words from each, quoted and attributed, so you can see the link it is drawing and judge it yourself.

Every quotation is checked before you see it

Before an answer reaches you, Noeis compares each quotation in it against the text of every source the agent was shown or read during that turn. A short phrase in quotes is treated as emphasis. A quotation of five words or more is treated as a claim about what a source said, and it has to be there.

  1. The agent writes its answer.
  2. Noeis finds any quotation of five or more words that appears in none of the sources the agent saw.
  3. If there is one, the answer goes back to the agent once, naming the missing quotations and asking it to quote only exact words or say the library does not cover it.
  4. If the rewritten answer still carries an unfound quotation, it is discarded, and Noeis shows you the passages from your library that bear on the question, word for word.

Citations follow the same rule. A source is cited only when the answer carries a run of its own words. A source that was retrieved but not used appears as related reading, not as a citation, so the citation list tells you what the answer actually drew on.

When your library has nothing, it says so

The Thought partner is told that if nothing in your library bears on the question, it should say so plainly in one sentence and not answer from general knowledge as though your library said it. Its search tool reports the same thing when a query finds nothing, so the agent does not receive filler to work from.

When Noeis falls back to showing passages directly and none bear on the question, the reply is a single line: nothing in your library speaks to this yet. Noeis also keeps a set of test questions that a sample library cannot answer, and a good reply to each must decline without citing anything.

How to ask so the answers stay useful

  • Ask about your reading, not the world: "What have I saved about why metrics stop working?" gets a sourced answer; "Why do metrics stop working?" invites general knowledge.
  • Ask for the exact words when wording matters, then open the source to read the passage in context.
  • Treat a decline as information. It tells you where your reading has a gap worth filling.
  • Highlight and annotate the passages you care about. Highlights and their margin notes are part of what the partner searches.

FAQ

How do I get AI answers that quote my own sources?

Use an assistant that searches your saved reading before answering and checks its quotations against what it read. In Noeis, the Thought partner searches your library, quotes the exact words it relied on with the source named, and any quotation it cannot find in a source it was shown is sent back for repair.

What does Noeis do when my library has nothing on the question?

It says so plainly in one sentence instead of answering from general knowledge as though your library said it. When it falls back to showing passages directly and none bear on the question, it replies that nothing in your library speaks to this yet.

How does Noeis check that a quote is real?

Any quotation of five or more words in the answer must appear in a source the agent was shown or read during that turn. If one does not, the answer is sent back once with the missing quotations named. If it still fails, the answer is discarded and Noeis shows the matching passages from your library instead.

Which sources count as citations?

Only sources whose own words appear in the answer. A source that was retrieved but not drawn on is listed as related reading, not as a citation.

Does this mean the AI can never be wrong?

No. The check verifies quotations and citations, not every interpretation the answer makes. It means you can check what a source said in one step, which is where judgment should start.
